An Influential Person

Gal Gadot.
I enjoyed watching Gal as a brave and strong, independent woman. Her role as Wonder Woman was empowering for me. In particular, the scene with No Man’s Land was extremely memorable for me. Despite her male companions’ urgings to abandon the civilians and their belief that no one could get across No Man’s Land, she bravely stood up against gunfire from the opposing soldiers and saved the civilians. While I was watching this scene in the movie theater I remember crying a bit. To me, it was a demonstration that women can be strong, badass, and inspiring. Moreover, Gal inspired me to think about my role as a woman and what I can do to contribute to the feminist movement. Additionally it taught me perseverance in face of hardships and to continue to strive towards my goals.
I was inspired by this movie to create an optic fiber dress that I ended up using as the finale for the InDesign x ASB fashion show. I titled it “Trafficked” and shot side by side pictures lit up in red and green. At first glance, fireworks seem to be exploding from the dress--which is an aesthetic inspired from the bullets deflected from Wonder Woman’s shield. At closer inspection, however, the celebratory facade obscures the crinoline, which was historically worn by women in the Victorian age and a symbol of a passive femininity. I wanted to convey that like in traffic lights, women have often been told to stop or go. They are told what they can and cannot do.
